Commercial Lines Underwriting Manager
Monitors, evaluates, and analyzes the activities of the Commercial and Farm Underwriting teams to support profitable growth. Supervise the day-to-day operation and assist in underwriting and pricing complex accounts. Works with the Director of Underwriting to manage the overall profitability and risk appetite for the Company.
This position will over-see our small to mid-size Commercial and Farm book of business for the state of Michigan.
Responsibilities:
- Establish proper practices to ensure profitability within each line of business.
- Develop and implement underwriting strategy to meet market needs.
- Analyze risk eligibility to ensure it aligns with the Company’s risk appetite.
- Manage the underwriting function to ensure effective solicitation, selection, pricing and retention of desirable business.
- Oversee the assignment of underwriting authority to staff and establish controls to monitor their ability to accept risks, determine pricing, coverage and place reinsurance.
- Ensure timeliness of policy processing including adequate review of underwriting files and outline helpful solutions to correct any issues found during the review process.
- Monitor the amount of insurance in force on single risk or group closely related risks with assigned territory, evaluate the possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance and take corrective action.
- Collaborate with the team when underwriting more complex accounts.
- Assist with the marketing of the Commercial and Farm product lines to maintain and enhance relationships with our independent agency partners.
- Effectively align the team’s daily operations to business objectives.
- Prepare and review various reports to manage and monitor workflow, productivity and profitability within the various lines of business.
- Coordinate relevant underwriting information with Loss Control, SIU, Claims, Marketing, etc. to proactively manage risks that effectively help us to offer a competitive product.
- Provide technical training and support to underwriting staff.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years of Commercial Lines Insurance experience required, plus 3-5 years supervisory experience preferred.
- Effective leader with a positive attitude, willingness to adapt to changing technology and the ability to operate efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Highly organized, detail driven and the ability to prioritize and delegate work as appropriate.
- Knowledge of Commercial, Farm and Agricultural insurance and the Michigan regulatory environment.
- CPCU or related industry designation preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Periods of sitting, standing, working at a computer, including video calls and in person meetings
- Ability to meet with agency partners throughout Michigan.
- This position is based out of our Home Office in Flint, Michigan with the current hybrid work schedule:
- Monday and Friday: optional WFH
- Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday: in-person at home office location
- Overall business travel-less than 10%
