We are in full swing summer mode here in Michigan and are officially in the “it wouldn’t be so bad if it weren’t for the humidity” season. This time of year also brings the rush of Michiganders heading north, some to cabins, some in campers, and some who are “roughing it” by pitching a tent! It seems that everyone who has lived in Michigan any length of time has made a venture “up north” wherever you may consider that to be (that’s a fun argument of course, but we’ll save that for some other time).
With the thousands of Michiganders who flock to the northern part of the state in the summer months, it’s hard to miss all the trailers that go with them. Whether you are towing a fifth wheel, a trailer loaded with that new side-by-side you got over the winter (you added that to your homeowner’s policy, right?), or the sparkly boat you just brought out of storage, it is important to keep in mind these best practices for towing and to make sure to share the road.
Take some time to read through these tips to ensure your towing experience goes smoothly:
- Make sure you are not overloading your trailer; all trailers have weight capacities, and you should know yours, so you do not exceed the limit.
- Before making that turn out of the driveway verify all your signal lights are working properly (don’t be the guy without functioning taillights on their trailer).
- Adjust your mirrors. It is vitally important for you to have a clear view all the way to the end of your trailer for your own safety and for the safety of other drivers.
- Use the appropriate ball hitch that matches what your trailer requires.
- Attach safety chains (cross these chains, do not have them run straight). If the trailer were to come disconnected this may save your unit from smashing into the pavement.
- Secure all items on the trailer to ensure nothing falls out during transport. (It would be a big bummer to arrive at your destination just to discover your lawn chairs are lying somewhere along I-75).
Towing can be a stressful situation for all involved, especially if you don’t have a lot of experience. Just remember to be mindful of your surroundings and to take your time, it’s not a race and those warm, sun-filled days will be waiting for you when you get there. Everyone and everything arriving safely is the first step to a terrific vacation so ensure that happens by following these tips!
