Spring is here and summer is on the way. Things are finally looking up for us Michiganders but, we all know this glorious weather can take a turn in an instant. Yes, thunderstorms, tornados, high winds, heat, humidity, lots of rain or no rain at all. What will this spring and summer bring in Michigan? It’s anyone’s guess, really. While we want everyone to thoroughly enjoy the warmer weather to come, we also want to remind you of a few things. Here we are again, being a buzzkill, we know. But, someone has to be. Might as well be the insurance company, right?
When we hear nasty weather is heading our way (assuming the forecast is actually correct), hopefully we have enough time to prepare. Our Director of Loss Prevention, Jeff, has these before, during, and after a storm tips for us:
Before the storm:
- Keep trees trimmed
- Check gutters and downspouts
- Buy surge protectors
- Park cars in the garage if possible
- Close all exterior and interior doors
- Secure outdoor items (like patio furniture)
During the storm:
- Make sure your phone is charged and capable of getting weather alerts
- Head to the basement or a safe space in your home
- Have all of the necessary amenities wherever you take shelter (flashlight, water, food, etc.)
After the storm:
- If the damage is severe, take caution while inspecting
- Take photos of the damage if possible
- Call your insurance agent if you need to report a claim
- Keep damaged property to show your adjuster
- Keep any cleanup receipts
Your first priority is you and your loved ones (furry or human). If a tornado is heading your way and all you have time do is run for cover, yes, absolutely do that! But, if you hear your neighbor say “I can smell a storm coming,” while your other neighbor is preparing to spectate on their front porch, prepare yourself and your home, we have a real doozy heading our way.
Jokes aside, your safety is no laughing matter. So, really, do your part, prepare your home, and, above all, stay safe this storm season!
