Spring Breaking and Entering

Insurance, Safety
Going on spring break? We love that for you. Unfortunately, that leaves your house filled with your personal belongings as a sitting duck for thieves. Things can go awry while you’re away which can be a huge headache upon your arrival home, so let’s see if we can avoid that!
We asked our Director of Loss Prevention, Jeff, for some advice for homeowners going on spring break.
Here’s what we’ve got for you:
- Set interior and exterior timers on lights so it appears that you’re home
- Let your alarm company know you’ll be away
- Double check that all doors and windows are locked
- Only people who need to know should be aware you’re leaving
- Be careful broadcasting your departure on social media (you never know who is watching)
- Stop your mail so your mailbox doesn’t overflow
- Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your house
- Don’t leave your spare key outside
Being away opens up your home and vehicles to other perils too (that’s insurance-talk for “potential bad things that can happen”).
Here are some bonus tips before you leave:
- Don’t turn your heat off if it’s going to be cold (pipes can burst)
- Change your thermostat batteries so they don’t die and prevent your furnace from running
- Park your cars in a garage if possible so they’re away from the elements and car thieves
- Make sure there are no faucets, lights, or fans left on
- Unplug appliances for an added sense of security
It seems like a lot to deal with before going on vacation but one of the many “joys” of homeownership is taking care of your home before departing. The last thing you’d want when you’re coming back from an awesome vacation is a disaster in your home.
Leave it to the insurance company to be a total buzzkill, right? It’s a tough job but someone has to do it.
Safe travels!
