Why it’s important to clear your sidewalk and driveway of snow

We are well into winter now here in Michigan. The cold, ice, and snow will be here for the time being and while we know many Michiganders hope for the chill to end sooner rather than later, we unfortunately have a bit more time left in our sentence.

Along with that sentence comes the glorious task of snow removal - cue the sighs. It’s grueling, exhausting, cold, and wet; we’re not sure if we could come up with anything worse (that may be a little dramatic, but you get it). As terrible as it may be, it is a necessity.

But why is it so important to clear the snow from your sidewalks and driveway?

  • For your own safety & ease: Having cleared areas helps to prevent accidental injury and makes the trek outside a little easier. Whether you are taking out the trash or walking to your car, filling your shoes with snow is never a good way to start your day.
  • For the safety of others: Ensuring that any person who visits your property (whether it be a friend, delivery driver, or family member) avoids injury is only party of this bullet point. If you neglect to adequately clear your driveway or sidewalk (areas that you are legally responsible for) there’s a chance you could be deemed liable for any injury that occurs to others as a result.
  • Shoveling is great exercise: During the winter months it’s hard to get out and be active, shoveling is a great way to get your body moving.
  • Prevents future ice buildup: This one is pretty straightforward. Removing the snow after each snowfall allows your areas to clear and melt when we get those few and far between sunny winter days.

While this task is not at the top of everyone’s “Favorite things to do in the winter” list, it’s worth it. For your own safety and the sake of others it is best to bundle up, put on a brave face and snow boots, and head out to get the job done.

We can only hope that this winter will be a mild one, but we Michiganders know better than to bank on that. So, find your shovel, buy a bag of ice melt, and make sure you’re prepared for the snow that is sure to make more appearances at some point this winter.
