Warmer weather is on the way here in Michigan! Cue the beachside bonfires and days spent on the water. We know you are excited but before you head out to enjoy that weather, we need just a few minutes of your time (it may be a matter of life and death, seriously).

2021 recorded a record high number of motorcyclists killed in traffic accidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 5,932 motorcyclists died that year, accounting for 14% of all traffic fatalities.

Surprised by those figures? We were. It is a jarring statistic which makes this blog all the more essential to read.

It is so important to understand the best practices for sharing the road with motorcyclists. We have compiled a list of tips, and we recommend keeping them at the forefront of your mind while driving this season.

  • Always check your blind spots and mirrors before passing or merging
  • Look twice before making a left turn
  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Increase your following distance and give motorcyclists plenty of room
  • Use. Your. Turn. Signals.
  • Be extra cautious around motorcyclists during rain or inclement weather
  • Stay aware of your surroundings (did we say this one already? No harm in repeating it)
  • Avoid distractions like texting and phone calls (this should be done at all times whether motorcyclists are present or not. It is after all, the law)

Taking a few extra seconds to take these simple precautions could save a life and save you the trauma of being a part of one of these tragedies. While they may seem like an inconvenience, these are easy tactics which can help ensure everyone arrives at their destination safely. And let’s be real folks, many of these tips should be practiced regardless of who you are sharing the road with!

We hope all our fellow Michiganders (motorcyclists, drivers, passengers, and pedestrians) enjoy this summer! Stay alert, follow these tips, and be safe!
