We have officially reached the time of year when preparations for summer road trips are in the works, packing lists are being created, and the countdown to fun has begun! Whether you’re taking a road trip across the state or the country it is important to be prepared!

Now of course there is a lengthy checklist of essentials you’ll need to pack but aside from the bag of snacks and road trip bingo boards there are a few steps you should take to get yourself prepared for your upcoming trek!

Here are 5 things you should do before you set out on your adventure:

  1. PLAN YOUR ROUTE. Plan where you are going, when you want to be there, and what activities you want to do at each destination.
  2. PLAN REGULAR STOPS. There is no need to set any world records for “Longest Drive Without Stopping.” Plan regular stops into your itinerary so everyone can stretch their legs, maybe switch drivers, hydrate, and eat.
  3. VEHICLE CHECK. It is important to get your vehicle serviced before you embark on your trip. Check your tires, top off fluids, and ensure the vehicle runs properly.
  4. BE PREPARED FOR CHANGES. There is a level of unpredictability when it comes to road trips. You may see an attraction along the way you want to stop at, you may get tired and need to stop for the night sooner than anticipated, or there could be road construction that sets you a little behind. It is OK. Keep calm and road trip on. Accomplish what you can and make the best of it, while bullet #1 is important there is no harm in making minor adjustments to your original plan.
  5. EMERGENCY PLANNING. While we hope your road trip is emergency-free, stuff happens. Make sure to pack jumper cables, a first-aid kit, and extra water in the event you need it. It is always better to be over-prepared!

The intent of this list wasn’t to stress you out but to ensure you have the tools to have the best road trip possible! Whether you are staying closer to home or traveling far we hope each road trip is successful and full of fun for you and your family. Safe travels!
