Losses come in all shapes and sizes. While there is no sure-fire way to prevent a loss there are steps you can take to minimize the risk and minimizing risks is one of our favorite topics to discuss!
No need to waste time chatting; let’s get right into it! Here are some great loss prevention tips that are easy to incorporate into your life but can have big rewards!
- If hail is expected, move your vehicle into a covered area (garage, carport, etc.)
- Trim large overhanging branches back away from your home and other outbuildings/structures
- Regularly clean and inspect your roof and gutters
- Install smoke alarms (this may seem like a given, but you wouldn’t believe how many people don’t have smoke detectors in their homes)
- Locate your water main shut-off and educate all those living in the home on where it is and how to use it
- Create and maintain a home inventory (this won’t prevent a loss from happening, but it will make your life a heck of a lot easier if one does) click HERE to learn how!
- Lock your car doors. In a study, investigators found that an average of 80% of stolen vehicles are left unlocked at the time of theft (don’t make it easy on a potential thief)
- Install motion-activated lights around the exterior of your home (shockingly…thieves don’t like it when a spotlight is thrown on them)
- Review your homeowner’s policy regularly to make sure you have adequate coverage (again this won’t prevent a loss, but it will make it easier if your policy is up to date)
Being proactive in loss prevention is a great way to protect the things you and your family have worked hard for! Be smart, be prepared, and follow these tips!
