Downed Power Lines: Weathering the Electrical Storm

Insurance, Safety

Storm Season is here and while we Michiganders hope for the storms to be mild and minimal, Mother Nature sometimes has other plans. We don’t always complain, a good storm is an excuse to break out our favorite goulashes and go splash around in the rain (don’t do this if there’s lightning). But with storms can come high winds causing fallen trees; during the spring/summer months you can just about guarantee a downed power line or two.

Pretty much all of us depend on power in today’s world, whether it be for our electronics, our vehicles, or our homes. The dangers of a downed power line are not to be taken lightly. Downed power lines can result in catastrophe for adults, children, and pets that come into contact with them.

Check out these safety tips from DTE about what you should/shouldn’t do if you see a downed power line –

  • Stay a minimum of 20 feet away from a downed power line and anything the downed line may be in contact with (water, fences, etc.). If the downed power line is near anything metal, a higher level of caution is vital.
  • Never drive across a downed power line, it can be hard to tell if a line is active, so assume that it is.
  • If a power line lands on your vehicle DO NOT exit the vehicle, remain inside and call for emergency help.

And, just for fun we have a tip for electrical safety inside your home during a storm. Think of this as an added bonus to an already super exciting blog post:

  • Should your home or basement flood during a storm, do not enter the flood waters. If the water is in contact with electrically powered appliances or electrical outlets, the water could be charged which could be fatal if contact is made.

When it comes to anything electrical the important thing to remember is to be cautious. There are people who are trained in the electrical field for a reason. Safety surrounding electricity during a storm, or any time for that matter, is important. Electricity is a powerful thing and taking the right safety measures can ensure you make it through the storm.
