General Information about Michigan Auto Insurance

The state of Michigan does things a little differently than most other states. Michigan operates under the concept of No-Fault Insurance. In short, No-Fault Insurance makes it mandatory for all vehicles to have insurance, and regardless of fault each party turns to their own insurance provider for coverage regarding damages and personal medical expenses.

There are 3 categories of coverage for autos in the state of Michigan – Collision Coverage, Comprehensive Coverage, and Liability Coverage.

Collision and Comprehensive Coverages are not mandated, but carrying Liability Coverage is required by state law. If you want to drive with the bare minimum of coverage, you may elect what’s referred to as PLPD.

PLPD (Personal Liability and Property Damage) covers injuries to others or their property. It does not extend coverage to the policyholder.

You may elect to expand your insurance coverages beyond PLPD to include either Comprehensive Coverage Only, or the combination of Comprehensive and Collision Coverage (often referred to as Full Coverage).

Comprehensive Coverage (sometimes called Other Than Collision), covers you for non-collision incidents such as theft, water damage, glass damage, or impact with an animal.

Collision Coverage is what it sounds like, but there are three different flavors to select from:

  1. Broad Coverage means if you are deemed to be less than 50% at-fault for an accident by your insurance company your deductible will be waived.
  2. Standard Coverage means regardless of fault you will be responsible for paying your deductible. However, after a claim is completed the not-at-fault party can file a Mini-tort claim with the at-fault parties’ carrier to recoup their deductible cost.
  3. Limited Coverage means there is never a deductible required with Limited Collision. However, if you hope to have your claim covered, the insured (you) must be less than 50% at-fault and supply a Police Report. If you are at-fault there is no coverage.
