Insurance, Safety

There is a light at the end of our frozen tunnel Michigan. The woes of winter are beginning to thaw, the feeling of spring is in the air, and that hint of excitement is starting to bud at the thought of another beautiful Michigan summer approaching. As we enter what many refer to as the “wet season” here in Michigan, Pioneer wants to make sure all of our fellow Michiganders are prepared for the challenges ahead!

With the snow melting and the ground beginning to thaw, water and excess moisture tend to be in abundance during this time of the year. Many of us will have our dehumidifiers running in our basements and our sump pumps working overtime to make sure the water stays away from the interior of our home.

With the impending “wet season” just around the corner, we figured now would be a great time to talk about a super fun topic – Sump Pump Maintenance! (Please, try to contain your excitement).

Pioneer wants to make sure you are ready to go and that your home is protected, so please check out these maintenance tips to make sure your sump pump is in tip top shape:

  • Clean your pump and basin if needed.
  • Run a test. Check to make sure all parts are working properly, that no pieces are worn to severely, and inspect for corrosion.
  • If you do not have one, install a battery backup. If your main pump goes out you will be glad you have it. Especially if you don’t notice the issue right away!
  • Check the pump’s exterior drainage system.
  • Monitor your pump for a few days. Make note of any unusual noises, odors, or signs of excess water.

Giving attention to these maintenance tips could save you a whole heap of work in the future and you may catch something you wouldn’t have noticed before. Sump pumps are wonderful when they are functioning properly but can cause a whole world of trouble when they are not. FUN FACT: The average life expectancy of a sump pump is about 10 years, and if you have a pump that runs frequently that life expectancy is even less.

Save yourself some trouble come spring and take a look at those sump pumps now, it is always better to be in front of any problem you may find!
