Back in 1908, fire insurance was expensive,
and many farmers were without coverage. In
January of that year, a few farmers from
Tuscola and Lapeer counties gathered to find
some means of acquiring fire-loss protection
that was affordable to all. As a result of
that meeting, George C. Whitaker (a driving
force in promoting the use of lightning rods
as fire protection), and six other local
prominent people formed The Farmers' Mutual
Lightning Protected Insurance Company of
Michigan, Limited. Focusing particularly on
the importance of lightning rod use, the
main philosophical building block for this
new insurance company was: "Loss prevention
is of equal importance to loss payment."
Over the years, we have been known by many
names, including State Mutual Rodded Fire
Insurance Company of Michigan (popularly
called "The Rodded Company" and "The Flint
Company") and State Mutual Insurance Company
of Michigan. After the merger of State
Mutual and Pioneer Mutual in 1967, our
present name, Pioneer State Mutual Insurance
Company, came into being. |
